A hidden gem in the great Vancouver :) a great spot to taste the flavour of Japan.
Sushi Bar Maumi offers a festive omasake using only the freshest ingredients imported directly from Japan.
The menu changes every visit depending on the seafood supply. Intriguingly, the restaurant is RSVP-only; it does not accept walk-ins or parties bigger than a certain number of people - mainly because of seating limitation of the place; there is a maximum occupancy of ten guests at a time.
The restaurant does 2 seatings each evening; I booked the last one of the night, which starts at 7:30pm and ends at 10:00pm.
I started researching on a unique birthday dinner place in July, and finally came across Sushi Bar Maumi after 2-3 weeks of comparing and reviewing. The omasake consists of 11 pieces of sushi and home-made miso soup for $75/person. Guests are free to order additional pieces after omasake.
We started with prawn sushi:
The prawn sashimi on top melts in your mouth like butter, yet, refreshing as a starting dish.
Next, we had the katsuo:
It was unlike any sashimi I've tried in other Vancouver restaurant. You can almost taste the flavour of the ocean- the freshness and crispness.
I forgot the name of this baby. But it was tender as expected. With minimal seasoning and sauces, you can taste the uniqueness of each dish.
Scallop sushi:
One of my favourite dishes of the night - chu toro! It was impressively tender and fresh. Though it's tuna, it has surpassed my expectation of toros'!
Then my favourite of the night- Uni! I've had unis in Vancouver but they usually come with a weird smell, and I have to hold my breathe when having them. But this Uni was out of this world. It's comparable to the quality that I've had in Japan. It's fresh and melty like butter <3 I want to have this everyday (haha)
I forgot the name of this fish ... LOL sometimes you are too busy eating that the names just escape you.
My most favourite of the night! Bluefin tuna chu-toro <3 <3 It's thick like a steak, laying on top of the crystallic sushi rice, it's a perfect blend proportion of rice and fish. It was so awesomely delicious that its smoothness and flavour surpass all words.
I wouldn't mind eating this every day (and with my uni) haha
BBQ Eel sushi was the final touch of the night. I am not a big fan of eel but this one was tasty. It was the perfect ending to our great evening.
Aside from the sushi, the omasake comes with home-made miso soup.
The broth was fresh and light with flavour of seafood. I wish I could have a refill... LOL
The restaurant also offers each table its own matcha teapot so guests can enjoy hot tea at any time. The boss lady was diligent and attentive to change our teapots to ensure a consistent temperature.
